Everyone who advertises on Findafurry has signed up to our code, where they pledge to uphold good animal care and not to make profit from their animals. For more information, please refer to the 'Findafurry Code'. If you think we could improve the code or our policies, please let us know - this is a difficult issue to negotiate and we are always pleased to consider suggestions.

If you feel that an advertiser has broken the code, please let us know and we will investigate - this is especially important if you visit an advertiser and find the conditions in their home are not what you'd expect for good pet care.

When looking to rehome a new pet, ideally you should also agree with the standards set out in the Findafurry Code. As a minimum you should comply with the Animal Welfare Act - it is now the law in the UK.

Staying safe when responding to an advert online

Whilst finding new animals online has a lot of benefits - especially as it allows individuals to find and rehome animals directly, without needing to go through a pet shop or rescue centre, it can carry risks - even for adults. These can be minimised by taking a few simple precautions. Findafurry does not include phone numbers or email addresses in the text of adverts to protect our advertisers. Instead, if you would like to respond to an advert you do so via a form, and your message will be sent straight to the advertiser's inbox.

We recommend that you consider the following advice when responding to a Findafurry advert:
  • When you enquire, don't give your home address or phone number until you feel comfortable to do so.
  • Include information about why you are looking for a new pet - if you have experience with that type of animal then say so, if not then make sure you have read a bit about them first.
  • Ask lots of questions about the animal, how they've been kept and what they are like - if you're not happy, you have no obligation to take the animal.
  • If you are under 16 or living with your parents, make sure you have their permission - and expect to be asked that question by the advertiser. It is against the law to rehome animals to anyone under 16.
  • If you arrange for someone to come to your home, make sure you are not alone, or tell a friend that you are expecting a visitor and arrange for them to call if they've not heard from you by a certain time.
  • If you arrange to visit someone in their own home, ideally make sure you take another adult with you. If that is not possible, leave the details of where you are going with a friend and arrange a time by which you should have called to say it went ok.
